Michel Foucault

Page history last edited by PBworks 16 years, 10 months ago

He’s most important to us. Together we read ‘The words and the things’, Dilek in Turkish, I in German. From there we got our “Osy osya osy” we write everywhere.

He is a philosopher of Deconstructivism. As far as I know he created “La differance”, and he proposed the concept of “heterotopia”.

born on October 15, 1926 in Poitiers, where he attendet attended the Jesuit Collège Saint-Stanislas

Ecole Noramle Superieure, Communist party

Foucault cautions that "visibility is a trap". It is through this visibility, Foucault writes, that modern society exercises its controlling systems of power and knowledge (terms which Foucault believed to be so fundamentally connected that he often combined them in a single hyphenated concept, "power-knowledge").

Foucault is mentioned in the title of a song by the Canadian band The Weakerthans, "Our Retired Explorer (Dines With Michel Foucault in Paris, 1961)". The band mentions another famous French philosopher of the era in the line "Thank you for the flowers and the book by Derrida/But I must be heading back to dear Antarctica." This is historically impossible, in that Derrida did not publish a book until several years after the putative 1961 date.

Foucault is mentioned by name in the song "Sex Ed." by the band Panthers.

Foucault died of an AIDS-related illness in Paris June 25th, 1984
